Julia Figueroa
Singer/Songwriter/Recording Artist
Julia Figueroa is an amazingly talented singer, songwriter and
performer born in Paterson, NJ. From an early age it was evident
Julia had genuine love and appreciation for music. At the tender
age of 3 she began expressing herself through song. Morning
rituals of listening to music while sharing breakfast with her dad,
a dedicated father and schoolteacher, deepened that love and
appreciation. As time progressed, Julia began embracing music from a
creative aspect. The desire to not only sing, but to compose her
own music, prompted her parents to buy her a keyboard at age
7. Self taught, by age 9 she wrote her first song entitled “Thank
You”, a fitting tribute to her parents’ unwavering support and
guidance.
At age 11 her family relocated to scenic Hellertown, PA. This
new environment brought Julia new experiences, challenges and
inspirations that she met head on. Still a Paterson girl at heart,
her determination to better herself musically mirrored the inner
city toughness of her birthplace.
At 14 she took top prize of $500 at a local talent show by
reworking Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. That
performance, the lights, the energy, and frenzied applause
motivated Julia to exclaim: “I want to do this forever!” Career
path chosen!
From that point forward, Julia’s mom, also an avid music
lover, worked tirelessly to sharpen her daughter’s skills even
more vocally and as a performer. In a short time she was growing
by leaps and bounds creatively and displaying a beautiful yet
strong voice that belied her youthfulness. People began taking
notice. To further nurture her creative development she enrolled as
an inaugural attendee of the Lehigh Valley Charter High School
for the Performing Arts in Bethlehem, PA. That curriculum would
enable free exchange of talent and ideas with other students
and soon thereafter, Julia would add guitar playing to her set of
musical skills. Simultaneously, as her musicianship grew so did
her songwriting capabilities.
During her junior year in high school, Julia performed an
original song entitled “America’s Pride” at a special dinner
banquet honoring various board members, alumni and deans from
several Pennsylvania Universities. Her riveting performance so
moved those in attendance she was offered a full scholarship to
Kutztown University in Pennsylvania on the spot!
Along the way Julia’s talents afforded her opportunities
to perform in venues large and small as both featured guest
and headliner. From the annual Musikfest Concert series in
Bethlehem, PA, The Mayfair Festival, NBA arenas, college
and university campuses to smaller more intimate café and
coffeehouse settings, she engages the crowd and does not
disappoint. She’s even donated time performing for charitable
causes like The American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life”
organization in support of Cancer research and treatment.
Eventually she crossed paths with Grammy nominated,
Philly based producers and songwriting tandem Darren Henson
and Keith Pelzer. Today, she continues growing as an artist,
performer and songwriter while crafting and recording her debut
LP “Made in Paterson”.
Julia’s songs speak to the soul and evoke connections to
humanity lost in much of today’s pop music. She is a voice
for many whose feelings, sentiments and experiences are
underrepresented. Her music is soulful, accessible, heartfelt,
inspired and honest. She is the girl next door but with the big
voice!
Julia credits her successes and achievements thus far to a
strong spiritual foundation and nurturing family environment. She
and her siblings are constantly encouraged to push hard beyond
perceived limitations, never give up and never forget where you
come from. Paterson and the Lehigh Valley should be proud!
